One of the most common questions I have been getting whilst door knocking or at the markets is "What is happening the amalgamations"
Here is the (brief and in point form) answer...
- Leichardt, Ashfield and Marrickville council are being merged to form one council, the Inner West Council.
- This merger will not be abandoned, like some of other mergers. Our councils chose not to fight the matter in court, and so we voluntarily merged. The NSW state government back flip on mergers only affects the councils that chose to fight the merger in court.
- The new Inner West Council has 5 wards (Marrickville, Stanmore, Ashfield, Leichhardt and Balmain) and each ward will have three councillors elected to represent them.
- The Mayor will be chosen by the new council.
-I feel that Independents are really important on this new council. It covers such a huge area; From Tempe through to Balmain, and each ward has its own unique character and population who deserve individual and independent representation. It’s a bit scary to think that one party, no matter which party, could make decisions for that whole area without the support of independents or another party. I.e if one party has the majority on council they won’t need buy in from anyone else to make changes. It’s always good to have checks and balances in democracy and try and avoid one party having complete power. If the policies of the party running the new council are good then there should be no problem getting support from independents or other party members. I would love to see an Inner West Council where every ward had at least one Independent .
